Seashell Saturday
Happy Seashell Saturday!
You wouldn't believe how many shells we found! It must be in the thousands! Hubby said it would take me a week to clean them.
Challenge accepted!!!
First, I soaked, and cleaned all of the shells. Then the sorting began...
Old sheet pans, and muffin tins work great for sorting shells.
All cleaned, sorted, and put away in less than 2 days! WooHoo! I win!
I only counted the jewel box (spiny oyster) shells, and we found 286 "jewelry quality" jewel boxes! I love hearing hubby refer to the perfect shells as "jewelry quality". He so gets it!
From large to tiny, we found various shells of all sizes. All kinds of kitten paws!
Some of them were even doubles!
And some had another shell grown onto them....
I love the pink calico's, but the orange and yellow ones are so pretty!
Looking at all of these shells gets my creative juices flowing!
Guess what I'll be doing today?
It's time to PLAY!

The Great Pacific Garbage Dump
This is the post I had ready for WOD, but didn't want to put the "pooper" in Shellbelle's party. It's a heck of a way to introduce yourself....
"Hello, my name is Della, and just look at what is happening to our beautiful oceans that we don't see."
It terrifies me that we may not always be able to eat from the sea... and is it really safe as it is now?
So, here is my "planned" post, minus the WOD inserts.
I want to share a video with you. There are so many video's to chose from on this subject, that it was difficult to pick one. I first heard about the Great Pacific Garbage Dump a few years ago, and it has stuck with me. Also called Garbage Island, and The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, this mass of trash in our oceans is killing our sea and wild life....and maybe US. The Pacific Gyre isn't the only garbage patch, either. There are others!
We can help not only by following the three R's...Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, but by not buying and using disposable plastics, or at least recycling what you do use. THEY may call them disposable, but it's really not.
Did you know there are "disposables" made from corn, wheat, and sugar cane? These truly are biodegradable, and won't harm the environment.
Use insulated, reusable coffee mugs instead of hitting a coffee shop everyday, and invest in a stainless steel water bottle, or any one of the cool reusable bottles instead of buying plastic bottles of water. It's better for the environment, and more economical, too!
Our seafood is at risk for depletion as well, but you can still eat your fish and shrimp with a clear conscience by substituting your faves with sustainable seafood, and farm raised varieties. National Geographic has a list of seafood substitutions. National Geographic also has an Ocean page, with amazing video's, photos, and loads of info.
I had to share this, and let you know how bad it really is. And just think, that video was from 2008! How much more garbage has accumulated in the last 3 years??? I've heard of people saying that "this isn't true", and "this isn't real." Really? It looks real to me. Oprah did a series of videos on this, you can find them on Youtube. I wanted to use them all! I love Oprah's narrative. She is such an awesome narrator!
So, this was my rant, so to speak.
I'll have more beach pics coming up, but I just HAD to post this.
I want future generations to know what a live shell looks like. To see them, hold them, and return them to the sea. It's important to me, and I hope know it's important to you, too!
